Having believed for many thousands of years that one can increase their luck with symbols; Chinese culture has surround its self with characters, proverbs and symbols that have been long regarded as lucky. Most of the Chinese luck symbols customarily reside in certain areas of the dwelling or place of work to amplify their fortune enhancing gifts.

Fu is the Chinese word meaning luck. During the time of the Chinese’s New Year celebrations the symbol Fu is hung on posters upside down to encourage luck for the coming year. This is the only time during the year a symbol is allowed to be intentionally placed upside down. Fu is just one of many luck symbols recognized all over China.

In Chinese folklore tales of dragons bringing fortune and good luck to homes and workplaces have long been told. Regarded as supreme over all other animals, their importance to China and its history is unmistakable in the shrines and temples erected throughout China in their honor.

In China dragons are believed to be able to control the rivers, lakes, seas and rain. It is said, to increase a dragon’s fortune and luck bringing abilities one should arrange them with moving water such as a fountain.

The tortoise is a symbol of prosperity and luck to many cultures. In China it’s thought that all the mysteries of the world are encompassed in the tortoise’s body and the patterns contained on its shell. The tortoise must always be placed in the North of a building whether it is inside or out, it matters not.

The closest creature the Chinese have to a modern day unicorn is the Qulin. This unique creature has an ox’s tail, horse’s hooves and legs, a deer’s body, fish’s scales, along with a dragon head, upon which a horns sits squarely in the middle of the forehead. This creature is said to bring about luck in ones career and fertility.

Chinese people also believe plants to be lucky. The bamboo plant is one such plant, considered very lucky in China. It is one of four plants the Chinese recognize for their determination during cruel seasons experienced by China. This plant is referred to as one of the Four Noble Ones. In Chinese the word for bamboo is very similar to the word meaning prayer. This is one of the main reasons it’s considered lucky to the Chinese. Many believe it will enhance their prayer energy to have bamboo present.
